Are small businesses hiring?

If you look at today’s job numbers, you’d say yes. The private sector added 243,000 jobs across the economy in January, and the consensus among economists and other job-market watchers is that the bulk of those people were hired by small businesses. That number drove the unemployment rate down to 8.3 percent. In addition, revisons to jobs numbers between November and December added another 160,000 jobs.

But the National Federation of Independent Business survey on hiring for January has a different view of what small businesses are doing on the hiring front: they’re not.

Or, at least not in any great numbers. According...

Read the Police Beat with any regularity and you notice a fair amount of coyote calls. The police seem to get as many calls about coyote roaming the area (usually the southeastern edge of Tarrytown) as they do about deers getting hit by cars.

#13;

The two — coyotes and deer — go hand in hand, says Sergeant Alex Cossifos of the Tarrytown PD. “The deer is why theyre here.”

Yes, and no, said Department of Environmental Conservation Wildlife Biologist Kevin Clarke who examines such trends in our region. The coyotes do not coincide with the deer population per se, he said, however they are very “opportunistic”...

(AP) HOOVER, Ala. — Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley on Tuesday announced a new economic development strategy that aims to turn bright ideas at universities and private research institutions into products that can be made by companies hiring state residents for good-paying jobs.

Bentley, a Republican who was elected in 2010 on a platform of job creation, released the so-called Accelerate Alabama plan at a meeting of economic developers Tuesday.

With unemployment down since Bentley took office but still at 8.1 percent, state leaders are expected to focus on job creation in the coming months.

We have not used the bright minds we have in this state, Bentley said.

Last year, I visited four continents. From booming cities of London and Rio de Janeiro, to coffee farms and dirt huts in East Africa, small businesses were in abundance.

Want a better life when you live in a crowded favela in Rio or a hovel in Cape Town? Start a hair salon or a vegetable stand.

Creating your own small business is perhaps the only way up.

I met hundreds of small-business owners in my travels, but two left the most lasting impression: partners Garth Angus and Siviwe Mbinda of Vamos, a company that conducts walking and bicycling tours in townships around Cape Town, South Africa. These two entrepreneurs from very different backgrounds merged their...

The long-awaited judgment of the European Court of Justice (ECJ) in the joined cases of Philips and Nokia (C-446/09 and C-495/09) was finally issued on December 1 2011.

WATERLOO Residents in University Downs are worried about their pets and their children after a pack of coyotes was spotted near Bechtel Park in Waterloo.

Residents say as many as eight coyotes have been spotted in a pack over the past few weeks, and theyve been seen individually in daylight. Animal experts caution that coyotes are not prone to attack humans, but that doesnt make area residents any less nervous.

Donna Lang received a frantic call at work one afternoon. Her 13-year-old daughter Carli had spotted a coyote at the end of a nearby suburban street while walking the family dog, a black lab. It was around 3:30 in the afternoon.

Lang said her daughter is nervous...
