n>(Reuters) – Self magazine Publisher Laura McEwen sits in her office in the posh Conde Nast building overlooking New Yorks Times Square and does nothing but play video games for at least an hour or two a day.

She isnt goofing off — she is doing market research for Self Workout in the Park, a video game she helped create to capitalize on the explosive growth of advertising in social games like the ones played on Facebook and other online networks.

Once on the fringes of digital advertising, social game ads are now the hip newcomer for Madison Avenue, with McDonalds Corp paying for players to build restaurants in Zynga Incs CityVille game and Unilever-sponsored Dove spas popping up in The Sims Social.

The number of people who play social games has ballooned to hundreds of millions globally, meaning hundreds of millions of dollars in ad spending in games are up for grabs. Researcher eMarketer expects social game ad revenue to soar 80 percent to $672.2 million by 2014. Zyngas $28.2 million in advertising revenue in the first quarter, more than double the amount a year ago, underscores the growth potential of social game ads.

Advertisers like the size of the audience, how they can target specific demographics and how users can spend several uninterrupted minutes a day playing a game.

Publishers such as McEwen also like how social games can lead to branded advertising opportunities. The Self video game allows for the magazine to sell advertising on virtual weights and treadmills, for instance.

All of these things can be branded and new things can always be created to be branded, McEwen said.

Giant consumer products company Unilever recently signed a deal to advertise a range of goods in Electronic Arts Facebook games. Players of The Sims Social game, which number about 16.4 million per month, can now stock their bathrooms with Dove soap or eat Magnum ice cream cones, earning rewards for using Unilever products in the game.

Unilever is also in talks with Zynga to promote Lipton products, according to Amanda Richards, the companys Global Media Director of Refreshment.

She said Unilever, the No.2 global advertiser behind Procter Gamble, has made social gaming a priority in its digital advertising budget because gamers can get directly involved with its brands, and they often do so by choice.

The gaming space gives you a significant amount of face time with consumers because when youre in a game, youre pretty much not doing anything else, Richards said.

EARLY DAYS

Overall, social game ad spending is nascent compared with other forms of online ad spending such as search advertising, which hit $15.36 billion last year, or banner ads, which generated $7.72 billion in 2011, according to eMarketer.

Social game ads are in their infancy and there is no industry standard for which to measure their reach. Conversion rates, or the rate at which people buy products they have seen advertised, are also low, according to eMarketer analyst Paul Verna.

Still, proponents of social game ads insist the results are there, just perhaps not in monetary form. Bounty paper towels was quite pleased with a campaign it had in an EA game called Restaurant City that generated more than 500,000 likes on its Facebook page, the company said.

The growth potential of social game ads has caused small companies to sprout up along Madison Avenue to serve as conduits between brands and social gaming companies.

Mitchell Reichgut, for instance, left the big advertising agency world to start the Jun Group, a 30-person company focused on video ads. Jun Group has already placed video ads promoting Pinnacle Foods Aunt Jemima brand, Claussen Pickles and ConAgra products in social games.

Other agencies focused on video game ads include Appssavvy and WildTangent.

Media agency Mindshare has even hired a digital gaming specialist, Geoffrey Greenblatt, whose full-time job is to advise his firms accounts on gaming.

Nearly all of our brands are involved to some extent and I only see it growing as they increase their spending in the space year over year over year, said Greenblatt, who wrote a 125-page book on video game advertising that Mindshare gives to clients.

He predicted that advertising in mobile games that friends play together is the next growth area. One big move in that area was Fordss Word of the Day campaign in Zyngas mobile hit, Words with Friends. Players get rewards for spelling words that Ford displays in a banner ad under the game.

Thats the first step and youre going to keep seeing brands get more innovative in mobile, he said.

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, May 15, 2012 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) –
Bitzio, Inc. (“Bitzio” or “the Company”)

/quotes/zigman/5409425/quotes/nls/btzo BTZO
+8.82%

, a leader in
media, mobile games, and the gamification of mobile apps, today
announced that it has agreed upon terms to acquire German mobile
gaming and software company, ACT Smartware (“ACT”). The acquisition
terms have been agreed upon by both companies and a signed letter of
intent setting out the terms has been executed. The acquisition is
subject to final due diligence and certain requirements under German
law. It is expected that the transaction will close in 1-2 weeks.

Upon formal execution of the agreements in Germany, the ACT team and
all assets will become a part of Bitzio, Inc. The acquisition will be
completed using only Bitzio shares and no cash outlay from Bitzio.
All revenues generated by the acquisition will be re-invested into
the growth of marketing, development and growth of Bitzio’s mobile
games. ACT reported 2011 revenues of approximately $1 million USD.
Bitzio anticipates revenue to continue to be generated through
existing ACT clients and apps, as well as new apps that will come to
market shortly.

“This acquisition has been unlike any other in Bitzio’s history. The
ACT team has already been working intimately with Bitzio and has been
integral in the development and deployment of key products such as
our EveryoneApps platform. With approximately 4,000 apps deployed
through EveryoneApps, we have already seen the depth of talent the
ACT team brings to us. They have amazing technical expertise and
incredible knowledge of the gaming user experience – both skills
we’re very happy to continue expanding in house,” commented William
Schonbrun, President and CEO of Bitzio.

Tobias Berlin and Gerd Mettendorf, founders of ACT Smartware, have
been in the technology sector since 1993 and 1985, respectively. They
have created innovative software solutions for large multi-national
companies such as Daimler/Chrysler and Bosch, both of which are still
on the company’s client roster. In 2008, as early adopters to mobile
technology, Berlin and Mettendorf created their first apps. To date,
their business apps consistently receive 4-5 star user ratings and
deliver higher revenue then most gaming apps.

Schonbrun continued, “This adds another critical piece to our mobile
gaming and entertainment story. With our recent acquisitions of MPC,
Knuckle Face Games and now ACT, Bitzio has the technical talent,
mobile app deployment, marketing and media and animation capabilities
to create the best in mobile gaming experiences in the world. In
fact, we already have plans in place to utilize many of ACT’s
existing apps and update them with a media and animation user
experience from MPC, resulting in apps that will blow users’ minds.
These apps will be like playing inside a Pixar movie with
gamification and behavioral data continually making the experience
better every time a user signs in.”

Tobias Berlin, Founder of ACT adds, “Developing app concepts and
creating the technology to make them happen is where we excel.
Bringing those ideas to life successfully in terms of marketing is a
challenge for developers of any level. What intrigued us about Bitzio
was their ability to see the big picture and string together the
talent and assets which power the mobile app consumer experience as
well as offer companies behavioral data and access to their fan
bases. It is the first all-encompassing solution we have seen in the
mobile apps sector and we are proud to become a part of Bitzio.”

About Bitzio, Inc.

Bitzio’s mission is to help mobile app developers get the full
potential of their mobile apps by increasing consumer reach,
conversion rates and bottom line profitability. Bitzio’s strategic
arsenal of methodologies and technologies allows mobile app
developers to quickly develop, market and monetize their apps. The
company aims to be responsible for the download of 1 Billion apps by
2014. For more information, visit

Penn National Gaming (PENN) sees higher estimates following several beats making the stock a Zacks #1 Rank.

Penn National Gaming owns and manages gaming and pari-mutuel properties. The company is involved in hotel, dining, retail, admissions, program sales, concessions and racing operations.

As of February 2, 2012, it had interests in 25 facilities in 18 jurisdictions. Penn Nationals facilities featured approximately 27,700 gaming machines, approximately 600 table games, 2,400 hotel rooms and 1.1 million square feet of gaming floor space. Competitors include Caesars Entertainment (CZR), Churchill Downs (CHDN) and MTR Gaming Group (MNTG). Only rival Churchill pays a dividend.

PENN was formerly known as PNRC Corp. and changed its name to Penn National Gaming in May 1994. Penn National Gaming was founded in 1972 and is based in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania.

Four of the Last Five Quarters Were Beats

Penn National has topped earnings estimates in four of the last five quarters. The average surprise for those beats was $0.07 or 14% more than the Zacks Consensus Estimate. The beat that moved the stock the most was the following the March 2011 quarter, where PENN posted earnings of $0.48, $0.08 ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate for a 20% positive earnings surprise. The stock advanced by a little more than 7% following the earnings release.

The lone miss occurred in February 2012 when Penn reported earnings for the December 2011 quarter. The one cent miss was a 2% negative earnings surprise, but the stock moved down by less than 1% following the report. The stock moved lower by almost 7% following the September 2011 report which was a beat of 12%..

Penn National Gaming Most Recent Reported Earnings

On April 19, 2012 PENN reported revenue of $736 million, roughly $33 million ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate and up from $667 million reported in year ago quarter. In addition, earnings per share came in at $0.73, $0.14 higher than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $0.59. The beat of nearly 24% was the largest beat in the last five quarters and the stock moved higher by more than 5% as a result.

Penn National Gaming Sees Earnings Estimates Increase

What happens when you grow weary of building and selling custom houses in Cabo San Lucas on the lower tip of Baja California Sur, Mexico?

If youre retired gaming executive Bob Miodunski, you come back to the US and take a temporary position helping an up-and-coming slot machine manufacturer gain a foothold in the industry.

That was almost two years ago.

Six months after being named the interim president and chief executive officer of American Gaming Systems, Miodunski, 61, dropped the temporary title. He put together a management and development team for the slot machine company that included some of his former associates and rivals from the gambling equipment manufacturing sector.

Miodunski decided Cabo could wait a bit longer.

Its kind of like putting the band back together, Miodunski said. I was having a lot of fun.

Earlier this month, AGS was granted Nevada licenses to manufacture and distribute gaming devices and to operate a slot machine route.

The approvals dont mean Miodunski and his team will challenge slot machine giants International Game Technology, WMS Industries or former employer Bally Technologies anytime soon.

Were not looking to compete with those companies, Miodunski said. We just want to find some locations for a few machines on the casino floors.

AGS has roughly 7,500 slot machines in regional markets and Indian casinos, primarily in Oklahoma, Florida and Californias tribal market. Roughly 96 percent of the slot machines are operated on a recurring revenue basis, with AGS splitting revenues with the casinos.

Initially, AGS has two products it will launch in Nevada: Pay It Again Video Poker and Caribbean Pearls, a pachinko-based game.

Miodunski also sees opportunity for AGS to enter both expanding and potential video lottery terminal markets, such as Illinois, Ohio and Maine. The privately held company owned by Alpine Investors of San Francisco opened offices in Las Vegas, but handles manufacturing from its Oklahoma City facility.

Its all about timing. We seem to have the right pieces in place, Miodunski said.

Miodunski was brought aboard at AGS in 2010. Alpine Investors President Graham Weaver said then that Miodunski would offer the leadership and motivation needed to take AGS to a new level.

The Nevada license allows AGS to place its slot machines on a much larger stage.

During his five-year tenure as CEO of Alliance Gaming – which was renamed Bally Technologies after his 2004 departure – Miodunski was credited with turning around the fortunes of the slot machine maker.

Several key technology acquisitions took place during his CEO years, creating the basis for what is now Ballys highly regarded gaming and systems business unit.

Gaming Control Board Chairman Mark Lipparelli, who worked for Miodunski 10 years ago at Alliance, said during the April 5 AGS licensing hearing that his former boss doesnt get the credit he deserves for saving the sinking manufacturer.

Lipparelli acknowledged their relationship and voted in favor of the licensing.

The company was on the verge of bankruptcy, Lipparelli said. Im not certain the company would have survived without his leadership.

Before becoming Alliances CEO, Miodunski oversaw United Coin, the companys slot machine route operation division. He helped develop and launch United Coins Gamblers Bonus, the industrys first player tracking system.

AGS has a new player tracking system similar to Gamblers Bonus, which Miodunski said would be useful in Illinois, where video slot machines are expected to be added to bars and taverns around the state.

Miodunskis retirement from Alliance Gaming came shortly after the company missed earnings projections over a couple of quarters. Results also had to be restated due to an accounting issue.

His departure came at a awkward time, but nothing can take away what he did to save the company, said one slot machine industry insider.

After retirement, Miodunski moved to Cabo and built a house. In six years time, he built and sold three houses in the Mexican resort town, and was considering his next steps when AGS came calling.

His goal now is to develop more proprietary games that AGS can roll out to new locations around the state.

But in case youre wondering, Miodunski still owns two lots in Cabo.

Sands Has Record Quarter Thanks to Asia, but Not Enough for Sands China

The Las Vegas Sands Corp. first quarter revenue nearly doubled from the same period in 2011 thanks to a huge boost from its three resorts in Macau and the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore. But while Las Vegas Sands rode Asian profits to an increase in stock price, Sands Chinas price on the Hong Kong stock exchange fell as it missed its quarterly earnings estimates.

During the first three months of the year, Las Vegas Sands booked $2.76 billion in revenue, 83 percent of which came from Asia. The Marina Bay Sands alone averaged $4.47 million a day. Net income for the quarter was $498.9 million, an increase of 72 percent over the first quarter of 2011.

Sands Las Vegas Chairman and CEO Sheldon Adelson said he isnt afraid of a slowdown in the Chinese economy trickling into Macau: The word plateau, in terms of Asia, is not in our vocabulary. Macau revenue increased 25 percent and net income increased 5.8 percent to $277.4 million.

The companys two properties in Las Vegas, the Venetian and Palazzo, increased revenues by 26 percent to $384.6 million, partially driven by strong baccarat wins. Altogether, Las Vegas Sands properties brought in $1.07 billion in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA), a measure of cash flow. No company in our industry has ever achieved a billion dollars of EBITDA for a quarter, Adelson said.

Despite driving Las Vegas Sands revenue past expectations, the companys Macau properties didnt do well enough to meet earnings estimates for subsidiary Sands China. Earnings gains of 21 percent fell short of market expectations, said Deutsche Bank analysts, who blamed lower retail revenue and reduced margins.

Bloomberg covers Sands China and Las Vegas Sands, and the Las Vegas Review-Journal takes a closer look at the Las Vegas-based company.

Boyd Books Profitable Quarter on Borgata and Biloxi Returns

Boyd Gaming Corp. reported a $5.8 million profit for the most recent quarter, a welcome improvement over the first quarter last year when the company lost $3.5 million. Strong performances by Boyds properties outside of Las Vegas, especially the Borgata in Atlantic City and the IP Casino Resort Spa in Biloxi, Mississippi, led the company into the black.

The Borgata, which Boyd owns in partnership with MGM Resorts International, beat analyst predictions by $5 million in cash flow, helping Boyd achieve a better-than-expected $133.8 million in the quarter. Its too early to tell how the opening of Atlantic Citys newest luxury resort, Revel, will affect the Borgatas future performance.

The IP, which Boyd purchased in October for $278 million, added more than $12 million to cash flow. The companys Las Vegas properties flatlined based on a decrease in table-game hold despite an increase in visitors to Boyds Fremont Street locations. We think the market is continuing to strengthen, not at the pace of the Midwest and South region, said Paul Chakmak, Boyds executive vice president and COO. The healing process is going to be longer and more extended in Las Vegas.

Riviera Downgraded After Further Losses

Riviera Holdings Corp.s troubles continued with another $2.5 million drop in year-over-year earnings. The increased loss, to $8 million, and the companys decision to sell its Black Hawk Riviera resort in Colorado, caused Moodys Investors Services to downgrade Rivieras company and debt ratings from B3 to Caa1. The downgrade also affects $83 million in debt that will be due in April 2016.

The Black Hawk Riviera recorded $9.7 million in earnings before taxes, depreciation, and amortization in 2011. Monarch Casino amp; Resort bought the property for $76 million in September and secured a gaming license last week. Although Rivieras current debt covenants require that the company use all the proceeds from these to pay down debt, it is possible that lenders will allow some leniency. Moodys warned that the Riviera will likely face further downgrades unless it dedicates all of the proceeds to debt principle repayment because the analysts do not believe that the Las Vegas location will rebound fast enough to support operations from cash flow.

IGT Revenue Up, Income Down

Gaming supplier International Game Technology (IGT) grew its second quarter revenues but saw a small decrease in profit. Net income was down 8 percent to $62.4 million in the quarter that ended March 31. The single-digit drop is a marked improvement over IGTs previous quarter, when the company reported a 33.1 percent year-over-year decrease in net income.

Despite two quarters in a row of income decline, IGT tried to steer attention to the 11 percent growth in revenues to $541.2 million. The company said the increase is due in part to IGTs growing interactive business. IGT bought social gaming developer Double Down Interactive for $500 million earlier this year and spent $115 million in 2011 to acquire online poker operator Entraction Holdings. IGT said Double Down picked up 24 percent more monthly users since December, bringing its monthly user total to 5.6 million.

Bally Technology Posts 20 Percent Revenue Gain

Casino gaming supplier Bally Technologies Inc. booked stellar revenues of $229 million in the quarter that ended March 31, a year-over-year jump of 20 percent. Revenue from gaming operations increased 16 percent while revenue from sales of gaming equipment were up 24 percent, partly because of a 10 percent bump in the average price of Ballys slot machines. The company also credits a stronger-than-expected rollout of its new Grease-themed progressive video slot machine.

The past several months have been momentous, CEO Richard Haddrill said.

Results for the companys new interactive division, announced in October, were not reported. Bally invested $54 million in stock repurchases since December and said it has another $57 million earmarked to rebuy more.

Anna Prosser is one of a growing number of women rising to the top of the pro gaming world. Prosser gained national attention last year when she won the beauty pageant crown as Miss Oregon USA. The 26 year-old Portland native graduated magna cum laude from Oregon State University with dual degrees in International Studies and Speech Communication with a minor in Spanish.

The lifelong gamer entered eSports during college as a video reporter covering the growing pro gaming scene. She currently serves as manager for the Portland-based pro gaming team Evil Geniuses and travels to eSports events around the world, giving her an insiderâ??s perspective on the evolving landscape. Most recently, she’s vying for the Maxim Gamer Girl online competition. Prosser talks about the sexism undercurrent that still exists in the male-dominated competitions and the growing opportunities that are opening up for female gamers in eSports in this exclusive interview.

Can you talk about your gaming background?

I grew up with a computer nerd for a dad, so he was always building us newer and better PCs for gaming before anyone else on the block.  I remember playing Captain Comic and Commander Keen in our little basement for hours on end.  Later on, we got really high tech, and used to play Warcraft 2 together via LAN from different floors of our house.  I guess I was destined by heredity to be a gamer; in fact my grandmother was the original gamer chick.  At her house, weâ??d play on her mint condition Intellivision console until the wee hours of the morning.  My best girl friend and I spent weeks beating the original Ocarina of time, and loved bashing each other in Street Fighter.  In my adolescent years, when all my guy friends got Xboxes for Christmas, and then wouldnâ??t let me play because Halo was for boys, I made myself content with watching and talking about the games.  In short, from my point of view, video games were always something that I did not only for love of the sport, but to interact with those I loved.

How did you get involved with eSports?

Like so many people, until my college years I wasnâ??t even aware of the eSports scene.  At Oregon State University I met Evil Geniuses team captain Geoff â??iNcontroLâ? Robinson (who, incidentally, is now my fiancÃ) and he introduced me to the world of professional gaming.  As I attended events and learned more about this awesome community built around something I had loved since my youth, my desire to get more involved grew and grew.  I didnâ??t have the chops to compete with the pros, but, man, was I excited to talk about the games and share their stories with the masses.  My background being in speech communication, I saw that there was a huge need for media coverage â?? so I grabbed a mic and a camera, and started interviewing the competing pros for the pleasure of their loving fans.  People enjoyed my videos to enough that, eventually, companies began to hire me to create similar content for their own initiatives, and the rest is history!  Now, I work part of the time for Team Evil Geniuses, and the rest of the time as a freelance content producer, host, and consultant.

What’s your current role with Evil Geniuses?

As in most eSports organizations, at Evil Geniuses we all tend to wear a lot of hats.  I do a little bit of whatever needs doing, but most prominently I manage facility operations in our StarCraft 2 training house: â??The EG Lair Powered by Beyond Gamingâ?, oversee relations with media, and produce video content both in front of and behind the cameras.  I feel so lucky to have become a part of an organization that has put itself in a position of leadership in the eSports community through solid business strategy and innovation.  I donâ??t take that position lightly, and I appreciate that my colleagues feel the same.

What’s it like being a female gamer in such a male-dominated industry?

For the most part, the eSports community is intelligent, forward-thinking, and well-meaning. That said, there is an undercurrent of sexism that often springs up in very destructive ways. Probably because we are so eager to believe it is not a problem, an idea of male superiority often sneaks onto our scene under the guise of â??constructive criticism,â? or even, if you can believe it, of feminism.  Without realizing what they are doing, Iâ??ve had male colleagues attribute the entirety of my success to the novelty of my gender in the scene, literally talk over my head in business discussions about me, and even admit working with me for quite some time that they have just now taken the time to look and realize that I have something more to offer than being a token female, or a tag-along pro-gamerâ??s girlfriend.  As someone who is ravenously hungry to share every skill I have with the eSports scene, those kind of barriers can be disheartening, but I try to focus on the positive impact I can make by contributing to eSports in the name of the female gender. Being a minority in your career field is always a challenge especially when your job often places you in the public eye but it is also a true honor.  I strive every day to be worthy of it.

With the success eSports has had over the past few years, what opportunities exist for female gamers in the pro circuit?
